[New Orleans, LA] — In the grand scheme of Mardi Gras, ‘tit Rəx ranks pretty small.
And that’s just the way they want it. Here, smaller is better: the Krewe boasts it’s “New Orleans’ first and only MicroKrewe.” The pint-size procession rolls through the Marigny and Bywater neighborhoods at Carnival time with shoebox-sized, satirically-themed floats and tiny throws (‘tit is short for “petite,” by the way).
And what about that upside down “e” in ‘tit Rəx? Before last year’s Carnival season, the big guys (Rex, King of Carnival) sued the little guys (‘tit Rex) for appropriating their name and sowing confusion and discord throughout the city (not really, I just made up the “confusion and discord” part).
Anyway, the solution was to invert the “e” in Rex, making it a “schwa” (it’s a linguistic symbol, you can look it up). Thus ‘tit Rex became ‘tit Rəx.
The theme of 2013’s parade was “Bare Minimum,” the fifth annual ‘tit Rəx mini-extravaganza.
