Devils Tower, WY — RoadPic

Devils Tower, WY – View from my rear-view mirror at one of America’s most iconic national monuments. Taken June 2010, riding an H-D Electra Glide Classic (from Black Hills Harley-Davidson in Rapid City, SD) through parts of Wyoming, Montana, and South Dakota for an article for HOG magazine called “Houses of the Holy” published Summer 2010. I subtitled the article “A Reverent Ride through Black Hills, Big Sky, and other Sacred Lands” and focused on sites of significance in Native American culture and history. Back story on photo: at the end of the day, riding from Crazy Horse, SD to Devils Tower, I was traveling on a dirt road to the Devils Tower Lodge, a B&B that sits on private property, right on the edge of the national monument. The tower loomed directly in front, and I thought if I positioned the bike just right, I could get a shot of it in the rear-view mirror. This photo was not published with the HOG article, but it’s one of my favorites from that ride.

  1. How long was the ride from the Sturgis, SD area to Devil’s Tower? There is little wonder why the rally is such a hot spot… with Mt. Rushmore Presidents and Crazy Horse monuments, the Black Hills and Bad Lands as well as water falls and caves. So, is the article still in print somewhere? It would be good to read.

  2. Great photo Glen! I honestly haven’t heard of this place. Guess I should learn my national monuments a little better. I’ve never been to SD, ND, Wyoming or those areas so I know little about these places. With the open space and nature, sounds like a great place to ride or just visit. I will get there someday!

    1. Hey Jeremy, “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” was a 1970s movie that prominently featured Devils Tower – that’s how I first heard about it. But you’re a lot younger than me! :)
