Somewhere off Interstate 10, between El Paso and Van Horn, Texas — West Texas is hot, dry, and vast. The speed limit on I-10 east of El Paso is 80 mph — so you can cover lots of territory in a short time.
The landscape here is strangely beautiful: the Chihuahuan Desert ecosystem is the most arid part of the state, and the Van Horn Mountains are rocky and scenic.
Despite its “middle of nowhere” appearance, this photo was taken just off I-10 near Van Horn. After a quick stop for a photo, I returned to the highway and headed to Marfa, where I planned to spend the night.
